Apparently, there are a couple of defects in the mailing list viewer code (mod_mbox) that are preventing the attachment from being properly downloaded. You could try pulling the raw message into your computer, and processing it locally. And, yes, there is a lot of useful stuff in Alex's patch, which ought to be cleaned up and integrated.
