Probably kind of a noob question: how do you usually decide whether to
resolve or close a JIRA?

I realise that closed is intended to be the final state in a workflow,
but then what purpose serves the resolved state? Is resolved more
likely to be reopened?

I have also noticed that the majority of the Mime4j issues have been
resolved (59) instead of closed (33).. Is this correct?
