Returning to this matter after the holidays, I reinstalled the server from 
scratch, then did:
# /etc/sysconfig/olpc-scripts/domain_config apc.edu.ph

then rebooted, and then did
# yum -y update

followed by
# yum --enable-repo=olpcxs-testing update

after which,
# ejabberdctl status
reported that ejabberd was running.
So it appears that the crash I experienced was the result of a faulty 
installation.

I next tried to connect a netbook running blueberry with no success so far.  
I'll report on that in another email.
