No it doesn't thats an incorrect assumption. James can't connect using SMTP AUTH, thats a different thing.


So the entire gateway thing is actually useless...

Gateways are typically used to:
1. let a remote server collect messages (either in a failover environment) on to server that already is accepting messages (so there is no need for SMTP AUTH).
2. serve as outside collector that then pushes onto a hidden server that doesn't collect outside emails. The hidden server usually then restricts on IP address, or is behind a firewall and doesn't plain accept outside connections.


If you have some other case where SMTP AUTH on the gateway is useful, please submit a patch when you have it working.
