No of course not, if you understand whats happening you'll realise that. A gateway should be set to accept mail for relaying from certain other hosts, if James is one of those hosts it will be allowed if it is not than relaying will be denied. In order to use a gateway you must first find a gateway you are allowed to use. Some SMTP servers might use AUTH to identify valid users, most use IP address and only allow host on their network to relay out-bound mail. AUTH is more geared to allowing individual users to relay outbound mail from outside the servers' network than for allowing gatewaying by other servers.
