From email address validation

Does anyone know of an approach or standard (commercial or not) that 
efficiently validates the email address of a sender?  I'm thinking in 
terms of preventing people from forging [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I know of a few alternatives, but especially given the latest worm, was 
interested in scanning what was out there.
