BTW, as I explained some days ago it's possible to study the heap by adding the -Xloggc:<filename> option and use GCViewer (http://www.tagtraum.com/gcviewer.html) to look at the generated log file. Its open source and released under LGPL.
I've attached one of my studies as a gif image. The red line is the total heap allocated, and the blue line is the used heap. The peak at approx. 150s is where I send a mail with a 2.1 mb attachment to myself, and at 300s I retrieved the mail again.
