I've had the same problem with my isp roadrunner (seems like yahoo
"blackholes" emails from certain isps).  Are there any free/open smtp
servers that are available for relaying?  I am assuming most don't to
stop relaying spam.

Not really... technically you've got the right idea, but usually the 
fall-back is to use your ISP.  If your ISP doesn't have it's act 
together and is blacklisted, well, you don't have many options (except 
maybe a new ISP?)
