Not one of my hot topics, but see
http://james.apache.org/provided_mailets_2_1.html, AvalonListserv and
AvalonListservManager for starters. A search of the James list archives may
yield more info.

There are admin. consoles around, such as
http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/ReadMsg?listId=21&msgNo=6704.

An often discussed objective is to fully JMX enable James so that any JMX
console can be used as an administrative tool. First step in this process is
to migrate to the Merlin container to leverage its JMX goodies and then to
instrument James. Again, a search of the James list archives will yield more
info.

Here are the lists...
james-dev: http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/SummarizeList?listId=20
james-user: http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/SummarizeList?listId=21
