Ararat, Initially, nothing is to be done in config.xml -- see http://james.apache.org/installation_instructions_2_1.html.
The sequence of installation steps is set forth there. As a new user, here is how I suggest you proceed: 1) Install (un-zip or un-tar) James into a folder. The folder name must not contain spaces if running under Windows. 2) The config.xml you are interested in will then be in s.t. like "C:\james-2.2.0\apps\james\SAR-INF". The above document indicates what needs to be done: you have to read and edit this file and experiment. A certain amount of trial and error is likely, so make sure that you take a copy of the initial file for future reference and possible regression. 3) To start off with, I found it's a good idea to make sure James will work just to send and receive mail on "localhost". To set up a user account for testing, see http://james.apache.org/adding_users_2_1.html. For example: telnet localhost 4555 Then log in as root with default password root (this is only for James and is controlled by config.xml). Then add a user: adduser me mypassword Use the command help to see a list of other commands. 4) Thereafter, you will want to set up a mail client account for user "my" with password "mypassword", in order to try to send and receive mail to/from [EMAIL PROTECTED] via James. 5) Only after that is successful will you want to work through: a) RemoteManager Administrator Account setup (perhaps). b) DNS servers definition (you will almost certainly need this) c) Managed Domain Names/IP Addresses (you might not need this right away) d) Postmaster Address (you will want to set up a James user account early on). Once again, you have to read and edit config.xml, and a certain amount of trial and error is likely. I hope this helps. Good luck!
