I'm not entirely sure of the benefit in adding an ID to an incoming message. It will not provide any form of trace backwards. Additionally, unless the ID is clearly recognisable as being added by James then all it serves is to hide the problem of the originating client / sender not adding an ID.
Ensuring there is an ID on all outbound certainly makes sense.
