Colin,
I have a degree of sympathy for your situation, there is little worse
that having to deal with an intractable problem in the face of high
loads and expectant clients.
I also understand your "solution", which is to put the customer first.

However I would like to make it very clear to our other users that the
root of your problem was not James, but your own unpreparedness.

By your own admission you had two self inflicted issues,

1/ Our RemoteDelivery element was misunderconfigured to *explicitly* relay spam
2/ Either FetchMail or FetchPop was also misconfigured to check our
local mailbox and guess what, re-deliver it to us

>From which the third symptom was observed of undeliverable mail
multiplying and consuming resources.

I would like to point out that James is a powerful tool which gives
you great freedom and doesn't draw much distinction between possible
and desirable. We're not nannies, here to protect people from
themselves.

Anyone wanting to use James in production would be well advised to
familiarise themselves with the basics of email, and then figure out
how James configuration can be used to modify James' processing of
email.

Changing configuration parameters without a sound understanding of the
effect is not good practice in a production environment.

Changing your system to accommodate your lack of skills may be
pragmatic, but the phrase "throw the baby out with the bathwater" is
brought to mind. Remember that you have now solved those problems and
gained some understanding of James. I would urge you to take a
measured look at what you now know about James before taking the
reactionary decision.

Finally reacting to your lack of understanding of your own problems by
posting messages with a subject of "Urgent: Spam Backdoor in James"
may get you noticed, but it is not great for our PR and won't win you
many friends round here if you do it again. We too have a high profile
and a valuable reputation, and our lists are also publicly archived.

And to reasure our other users, this list exists to provide support to
new and existing users of James, we can help you to gain the
understanding you need, whatever you want to do. But you do need to
ask the right questions, and not frighten the horses.

d.
