I can send email messages less than around 8 MB using JAMES. When I attempt
to send anything 8 MB or larger, I can see through Ethereal that once the
client sends the "EOM:" message to the server, the server actively closes
the connection; when I send a smaller message the server provides me with a
"250: Message received" response at that point.

Due to the lack of any error messages in my log files at this time, this has
been fairly difficult to research. I have attempted this with a 0 attachment
size limit specified in the configuration, and with a 20 MB attachment size
limit specified. This behavior occurs within Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2003,
Outlook Express, Thunderbird, and it occurs both on the local network and
from the outside world. I have even started to aim a little lower with my
efforts increasing my Java heap size to 256 MB from 64, with no success.

I somehow doubt that my description of this issue will elicit any responses
of the form "Do X, Y, and Z to fix this." but I wonder if anyone has some
insight to share regarding the continued troubleshooting of this issue? Is
there a magic spell that activates verbose log files? Have I failed to
consider the obvious, instead rushing headlong into dead chicken waving?
Please help me before the horde of end users find out where my office is
located and rush over with torches and pitchforks held aloft!

Thank you in advance for any assistance provided!
