No, but that sure sounds like me. :)

This problem persisted with a setting of 0 for <maxmessagesize> and now with
a setting of 20 MB.

I can tell from the debug information in the log that it is not throwing any
exceptions, as I would expect from a message of this size. Unfortunately for
me, James prefers to torture me with silence.
