Look at the RemoteDelivery in the current trunk.
I applied a patch (under approval) few weeks ago to add gateway authentication.

I also planned to change the current way by optionally supporting gateway urls like "smtp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]:ip:port" in addition to "ip:port" so that we can specify different auth for different gateways. I had no time, yet.
