don't want to make changes to the hosts file

i am trying to use the james for sending my mails for which i have to make 
changes in the hosts file which i don't want to make 
  secondly i am trying to use james with my web application which is on a 
different machine on the network and i am unable to use james using the two 
parameters of james ie; port no which is 25 and  domain name mail.mydomain.com 
what all other parameters need to passed to application to use the james which 
is on a different machine
