This may sound a little obvious (but it has worked for me in the past during
upgrades), did your restart the instance of JAMES you copied to??

Ok I took up your advice and tried simply copying it.  Doesn't work.  I copy
the 2 files that come with a message (one is the actual message, the other
looks like some sort of a binary file describing it) - and they just sit
there and nothing happens.  When I try to download my mail nothing happens -
no errors or anything, just as if those messages weren't there.

Then it should be enough to copy the "var" folder.
