If you use the pure db implementation its completly stored in the db.
But we also provide dbfile.. In dbfile the headers are stored in db and
the rest in filesystem.

I am also in need of some kind of webmail for james. Pop3 is just too
slow...
However, if I use the db implementation of james, is the whole message
stored in the database? I would be concerned about a 1G blob record
in the database. Or is the db implementation just store a "pointer"
to the message that is still stored in the filesystem?
Thanks.

Sorry for the probably messy email.
First of all, can you confirm that if I use James with MySQL then I
can build an application around it to access the emails from the
web? (I am actually thinking of an applet)
I'm not saying I am going to do it, just playing with the idea.
Sure you can.. But be aware that the passwords not stored clear in the
DB.
Of course SHA base64,
But why I can't read mails exactly from DB?
Now I write application to browse mails in DB repositroy without SLOW
pop3. Working good and fast!
proper wraper for low level operation it's enough!
If clien want fetch mails from the server then run Thunderbird.
You could also access the email from web by login via pop3 to the
server from the webapplication. Thats what many webmail do ;-)
Secondly, am I right in thinking that with all users having
downloaded all their emails, I can safely switch from file based to
Db base repository simply changing config.xml? In this case a
little help and advice wouldn't go amiss :-)
Thanks
Giulio
Yes thats all you need to change.
