When you see this problem are you at home, connected to the internet via a domestic ADSL broadband account?

If so, it might be down to your ISP changing your IP address from under your feet. Apparently this helps cut down on peer to peer abuse for them. I haven't noticed the problem with email but it used to play havoc with my VOIP phones until I paid for a fixed IP address.

I suppose one way to check for that would be to login to your router and see if the WAN IP address changes at around the time you notice the problem.

... or it might be something completely different ;-)
