Actually defining your custom storage should be as simple as defining your implementations for a set of APIs. I am guessing somewhere for each module, implementations are loaded via spring so application context xml belonging to your domain must be telling you a lot.
If you are really writing some serious stuff, then your best bet is actually building the code and try to debug it.
