Make it smaller, get a faster modem.
There's a trick that you can do with javascript to preload images before
they are needed, ie. if you displaying pg3 of a series and an image will
be needed on pg5 you can preload the image so that when the reader gets
to pg5 it is already there.
If an applet parallel exists, I am not aware of it.
