While I mainly use Kawa for its project management ability, I would most
certainly agree with the comments on Textpad. I learned Java using Textpad
and feel it is one of the best programming editors I have ever used. I have
Textpad set as my default application for most of my text related documents;
event logs, .ini and .properties files, etc..

I have helped a couple of people here at work get started in Java. I
normally suggest they start out with Textpad as a quick and easy way to run
the example programs and "really" learn the language before getting caught
up in an IDE.
