Off the three formats available, Web-based discussion, news-groups and
mailing lists, I have found it much more efficient( and convenient as well
with some exceptions ) to use mailing lists. news groups would be a second
choice. I haven't gotten sophisticated enought to use web-based discussions.

Again, to use mailing lists effectively your mail reader needs to have some
basic facilities such as automatic filing of incoming messages based on
certain rules. I setup Outlook98 to automatically file all messages coming
from servlet-interest to the servlet-interest group. And have the folder
order by subject.

If your mail reader is capable of automatically creating subject based
sub-folders( it is possible to write a VB script under outlook to achieve
this. I haven't found this absolutely necessary yet ) then it would be much
more convenient.

I haven't had much luck with newsgroups reader ( including the freeagent )
to give me a level of comfort. And also lot of corporations block newsgroup
reading.

With the advent of facilities such as e-groups.com, mailing lists are going
to be a considerable benifit to smaller closely knit groups. I think mailing
lists are the least appreciated of the internet technology.

Well, there is already a web-based archive of this list, so if you
want to read it that way, that should take care of that. Just because
you're getting swamped with the messages, no reason to force everyone
to change.

I personally find web-based discussion groups inconvenient, although
news-based discussion groups (i.e. newsgroups) are just fine. There
are already several comp.lang.java.* newsgroups. I don't think there
is a servlet/server-side newsgroup yet, although there was some
discussion of it some time back (I don't know whether it moved to
formal discussion to create such a newsgroup). Of course, that could
be in addition to this list as opposed to instead of it.
