I think the important point to observe here is that URLs are not file
pathnames, and they are not supposed to be.
Read the RFC(2396) on URIs and you'll see what's going on. It is not
desirable to have pathnames and URLs overlap. Internet resources and local
filenames are totally separate domains, with different clients and different
needs; therefore, different naming and hierarchical algorithms apply to each
one. As a servlet client, it's most likely that you don't even care that
the resource is a servlet; this is why you can set aliases for servlets in
the webserver.
"servlets" - filesystem location where servlet developers deliver all their
servlets
"servlet" - logical resource partition where servlets can be invoked by HTTP
clients
