I was hoping someone wold provide a more definitive response, because
my knowledge and recollection of JavaLobby is fuzzy. Anyway, I
believe they have been around quite a while and are a legitimate
group. I seem to recall the group was started by and included Java
developers, and as one example of the kind of things they do, way back
when Microsoft first start messing around with Java, JavaLobby
petitioned/campaigned for them to stick to the standards and not try
to fragment Java. Don't know what kind of things they have been doing
lately.

I don't know what "joining" it is all about, or if there is something
special going on now, so you might check into that. Don't know if it
is the same message you received, but I just received a junk email
spam (which is a whole separate story) from Java Developer's Journal
(JDJ) encouraging me to join/support JavaLobby.

Dejanews might be one place to learn more about them.
