i would suggest to use something that displays even before the parsing, so
that you can look at your template directly using a browser.
(that of course works only for simple replacements, not for more advanced
stuff like loops.)
then you want to make sure that the chances that something like your
placeholder could be real text is pretty small.
i personally use something like ##placeholder##.
