We have been using Rule Of Eight's EasyMail package to send mail:

It is a wrapper for sending simple mail messages. It can use JavaMail,
NetComponents or Sun's SMTP classes, whichever you have installed. It
doesn't support attachments, but it is open source so you could probably add
that functionality and fold it back in.
