There's an encoder available for free at
http://www.acme.com/java/software/Acme.JPM.Encoders.GifEncoder.html
I wrote a servlet (GifServlet) using that encoder. You can find it with an
example and all the source at
http://www.metawerx.com.au/aaron.porter
Jason Hunter also uses the acme encoder in the examples from his book
http://www.servlets.com/jsp/examples/ch06/index.html
I think most people writing GIFs from Java are using the acme encoder.
