As far as word format, if I were going to any marked up format, it would
be RTF ( at least until everyone understands XML, ) because it's much more
portable than trying to figure out word's format of the version. Actually,
though, in the case you describe, I'd just use a text file.
One of my most gratifying projects was a java application ( before
servlets ) that read spooled files off an AS/400 and wrote them to a PC
drive as formatted text, along with an index showing the report
title/heading, where they could then be written to CD-R and removed off all
hard drives. The client had accountants who ran reports as large as 7 or 8
thousand pages and kept them for more than a year. This was actually
beginning to affect processing. Afterwards they could just get the CDs and
load the reports into word, which made everyone happy. The only extra thing
I had to do was to write hard page breaks and word displayed the reports
just like the original AS/400 prints.
