Hi,
I also ran into similar trouble when I was using Informix
drivers with JDBC-ODBC version.
I did not get answer from anyone including Advance-Java group.
Result, work around.
- Created a tempcount table with int count field
- insert into tempcount select count(*) ...
- selct count from tempcount
- delete tempcount ...
Like it or not, this is what I ended up into...
Seems you have same situation..

! ! >From what I understand, Microsoft Access is not really a SQL database, so it
! ! may not conform to the SQL Standards. It's a navigational database that is
! ! made to look like a relational database by the Jet engine that Microsoft
! ! uses for their ODBC system. ResultSet.previous(), and ResultSet.absolute(4)
! ! are JDBC 2.0 calls, which aren't going to be supported by the JDBC 1.0
! ! driver that you have for MS Access. I guess, unless you can find an method
! ! specific to MS Access, the only way to do it is to run through the ResultSet
! ! and count them up.
