J++ is a really cool IDE but it doesn't allow you to use a different JDK...

It's actually really easy. In general all you do is include the relevant jar
files in your (project if using J++) classpath, set the start class to be
the start class of the servlet engine, put a breakpoint in your servlet,
start the debugger and try and access the servlet. Then, bingo!

For JSDK2.1, you can get the relevant info from startserver.bat.

Generally the hardest part is getting the bloomin' servlet engine configured
properly. This is made more difficult by the typically very much less than
useful messages that servlet engines spit out when they can't find/load your
servlet.
