Because the applet is executable Swing/AWT code, though, and servlets send
only HTML back to your standard Web browser, an applet has much more
fine-grained control over the UI--you can do tree-hierarchies much faster,
you can have toolbars that can be dynamic and interactive, hierarchical
submenus on a menubar, and so on.
Something to consider--if you're planning a sophisticated UI, sometimes HTML
just doesn't cut it. (DHTML and CSS go a long way towards remedying that,
though.)
