Subject: Re: Newbie architecture advice needed - servlet/JDBC/applet
Let me contribute with my experience.
I had a similar trouble: a applet to access Oracle.
At final I choosed a 3 tier model: A applet requesting a servlet which uses
the stream between them to send back data, using Property class through the
stream in the case of retrieving one record at a time ou a \t separeted
string with all data beeing manipulated by a StringTokenizer at the applet.
Swing?
Swing is great, but for applications up to the time Swing comes along with
browsers.
It is hard to convience costumer to download the plug-in just to see you
applet.
It is better to use jdk1.0 to build the applet (1.1 if you think your
target people already have newer browser) and 1.2 to build the servlets to
get data to and from Oracle.
Hey!
Come on Nic Tens of thousands? I use Java JApplets and found that once
they
are loaded and JITed they are as fast as anything else.
The real question is to ask ones self is how much interactivity is needed
between the
user and the data. Don't just restrict yourself to javascript, JSP and HTML
when a JApplet is
more appropriate. I have used tab panel and JTables combinations that make
the my products slicker looking and more functional than can ever be
accomplished
from the above restrictions. IMHO.
