Sorry for my earlier (maybe too short) response
(I was in a bad mood).
The easiest way to achieve what you want is to use:

response.setStatus(response.SC_NO_CONTENT);

in your doGet of doPost method.

As Jason Hunter says on page 473 of his book,
it avoids the 'Document contains no data' error.
