The three things are fairly much related. It could be understood by using the
terms in their contexts:

Context 1: I want to persist an object.
I have to serialize it, and write out the bytes to a disk or other storage
medium.

Context 2: I want to send a message to an object on another computer
I have to marshall the request into a network protocol and transmit it.
Sometimes, this will involve serializing objects that are part of the request.
(Note that with RMI and CORBA, the 'marshall and transmit' part is done for
you. RMI uses the Java Remote Method Protocol (JRMP) by default, and RMI-IIOP
uses the Internet Inter Orb Protocol (IIOP). CORBA uses IIOP exclusively.)

Hope that helps,
David.
