while we're discussing ListServ Etiquette why don't you mention the fact
that postings should be in plain text and not HTML? i get tired of
people who feel it is their responsibility to set the rest of the world
right (since obviously they're perfect otherwise they wouldn't be who
they are, right?). if we'd all just discuss Servlets and JSPs and stop
posting off-topic emails trying to correct people on their mailing list
etiquette there'd be a lot less off-topic traffic. (funny how that
works...)

IMHO, this list is for the help of everyone, experts, beginners, and all
those in between. i admit that the repeated "Where can i get a credit
card servlet?" post gets annoying in the extreme and a lot of people
should RTFM before they post, but nobody said this was a selective
list. it's not like you've got to pass a quiz for admission. if people
are that bent out of shape over it someone should start a moderated list
and prepare to dedicate your life to policing other people's postings.
boy, does that sound like fun.

again, IMHO, it's better for everyone if we all exercise a measure of
restraint here. try deleting the email before you flame the poster in
everyone's face. and personal notes should be kept that way -
personal. heck, i feel bad just for replying to your posting and i know
it's going to draw a lot of replies which will, again, flood the list
with tons of off-topic emails. for all of you out there who feel it's
your responsibility to teach the rest of the planet how to behave in a
mailing list go back to newsgroups or, PLEASE, just try biting your lip
and hit that delete key...

(boy, i feel like i just painted a big ol' target on my forehead or
something...) @:)
.............ron.

p.s., you know, one way to cut down on the off-topic, didn't check the
archives or any local search engine, postings is to force submission
through a form which can only be reached through the archives... that
would be different... :) for instance if the list server only took
submissions through a form-called servlet (of course) and then
propogated the posting out through email like it does now... hmmm...
at least that way people wouldn't be able to claim that they couldn't
find the archives... :)
