There are several issues to consider when mixing MS components with Java and other industry components that make IIS 4.0 less appealing than Apache. Especially if you want to use Index Server to provide search capabilities. When you install Index Server, you also have to install MTS (for COM support), then most of the configuration for Index Server is actually done in the Management Console for IIS not in Index Server. So, configuration is extremely confusing because it is not obvious where to go to setup certain functionality. We had to spend an inordinate amount of time on Microsoft's support line (2 separate configuration issues at $275 per incident, makes the claim of "comes free with NT" seem ludicrous. I will have to admit though, that the MS support people were professional, even though they didn't always have an answer.) to find out how to configure IIS and Index Server to work seamlessly with JSPs and other unknown file types. It is simply poor design that a good deal of the configuration must be done in the Registry rather than in the application GUI (I think this was by design). This may have changed in IIS 5.0. One of the biggest drawbacks of the MS way is that everything works well as long as you are using all MS components, but when you try to mix components, you run into gotchas left and right. Also, I found the overall performance of Apache to be far better and the ability to switch platforms or plug and play major components, such as webserver and search engines, a major benefit. One of the drawback of MS support services is that most of their people don't know anything but MS products. In fact I found them, in some cases, to be totally ignorant towards non-MS stuff. So when it comes to mixed environments, I try to stay away from MS products, unless there is an overriding business reason that prevents me from doing so. -ernie Santosh Tiwari wrote: > hi Amarjeet, > i have worked with apache and IIS .so i can say about them. apache > performance is very good for servlets .It works very well with nearly all > the platforms .Installation wise and configuration wise it also good .IIS > has one advantage over Apache of its better integration with NT > .Configuration is a little more easier.and if you are planning to use > microsoft technologies or providing atleast support for them IIS will be > much better. > Regards > Santosh > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Amarjeet Kaur" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2000 10:19 AM > Subject: jserv v/s others? > > > Hullo everyone > > My question is a bit acedemic.
