To the original poster: Indeed there might be more than one reasons that
your code fails. However, as I have found out after drilling a nice hole
on the lab's walls with my head, the p. 290-291 example from J.Hunter's
book as well as the similar example from j-nine refuse to work with
NScape, unless you add a call to con.connect() right after you close the
output stream (out.close() on p.291) Apparently, the code is correct as
is, and con.connect(), being void abstract, shouldn't be called directly
from you. But life is full of bugs.

To jh: It could be nice if the new version had a few (more:-) footnotes
pointing to implementation bugs, as many more servlet supporting servers
are out there by now. Alternatively, this could be done with an all
servers bug-tracking web-page that will offer workarounds. I understand I
might be asking too much from you, but some of the O'Reilly folk could
help? This centralised spot would put a pressure on implementors. And
speaking of all caps, can we see an updated footnote on server side
includes syntax (p.27)? In full disagreement with your suggested all caps,
no quotes for the Java Web Server, JWS 1.x requires all lower case AND
quotes, which accounts for another symmetric hole on the wall of the
lab:-)

Looking forward to the new version of an excellent book,

Kostas
