[answering to the list, to dissuade people from believing this line of

I am not Nic, but judging Java knowledge from a post on list policy is
even more lame than face reading. Also, irrelevant to whether he is right
or wrong.

That's not bad per se. Maybe it will cross his mind to go to a more
appropriate place so that he gets a faster answer from more appropriate
people. I wonder, if this and all other people of similar behaviour (e.g.
those posting repeatedly Javascript questions) would dare do so if they
were in front of a microphone in an auditorium with 3,000 people (see
bottom).

This is the major source of misunderstanding: THIS IS NOT A FORUM!!! It is
a mailing-list on a VERY specific topic, i.e. Java servlets. If we liked
wading we would have been flipping through comp.lang.java.programmer. My
newsreader just informed me it has 18,000 new messages. THAT is a forum
and one can go there and ask wonderful questions. In fact TextArea was
highly discussed there right now, just like two months ago when I had
checked again, always the question being if you can have multiple fonts in
it. Smileys would be a breeze of change. On the periphery of java
servlets, SOME questions on server-side processing and communication are
normal. Marginally, some slightly off-topic questions might be answered in
an attempt to 'enlighten' a novice list user. Other off-topic questions
are occasionally dealt with direct mailing. This is what Nic suggested, I
believe.

I am also sorry for the flower-power era being over and all that,
particularly as I was busier doing other things than coding at the time.
However, apart from a small spot in Hyde Park, appropriately dubbed the
speaker's corner, I know of no other place where one can bubble on
irrelevant issues and the audience won't be annoyed.

As said, it is not a forum, and of course there is nothing wrong with
asking questions on how to use java classes in SERVLETS. However, I bet
you use I/O a lot in your servlets. How about a barrage of questions and
answers on how to move a directory on Unix through Java? Or do you
really think that we have no other questions in (programming) life?

I speak for myself (usually) and I say you could not be more wrong. You do
not need to speculate about Sun. Have a go with the statement of purpose
for this list. If you look carefully you may also find out that actually
THERE IS a servlet-forum (18 subscribers) which is different from
servlet-interest (3,173 subscribers).

Enjoy the list,

Kostas
