Maybe Apache does not allow this. ie. Once you are authenticated at a higher level,
Apache ignores the need to authenticate at a lower level. You would already be
authenticated at the higher level, so why do you need to authenticate again? The
question is rhetorical. I know that their are many reasons. I've struggled with this
on Netscape Enterprise Server, which doesn't deal with this problem very well either.
It would be nice if web servers would handle authentication at sub-URLs off the same
document root. Can anyone comment on this? Are there web servers out their that do
this?
Anyway, good luck.

Hi Tim,
mod_auth is not loaded in my apache's httpd.conf.Is it necessary for server to
implement authentications?
The Apache is already running a company intranet on one of its virtual hosts
and it asks for user name and password when anybody requests that intranet
URL.So I already have the user name and password authentication scheme running
on the index page of the intranet.
What I want now is that when the visitor goes to a specific sub directory in
the intranet then also the server should authenticate the user.
Thanx
Alok
