Almost forgot one:
If you're really desperate, and are deploying to a
fast, well managed intranet where you have strict
admin control over the desktops, you might consider
having an applet read the entire dataset over into
client memory, thus moving the burden completely
away from the server. Although you could use servlets
for that, it's really moving off into traditional
client-server programming, which I suppose would be
off-topic. Something to consider, though.
