I can't speak on solaris, but
we did have a similar problem
on Windows, and 1.3 did help.
It has an option to run an incremental gc thread all the time.
The docs imply that this may cost
10% in cpu. We only had limited
success with the default settings.
There are however other (undocumented) flags that make
the gc more aggressive.
