First off, let's get things straight about what is or isn't rude. If
someone makes a straightforward, non-caustic comment that a post is
inappropriate, or suggests the poster check the list archives, or some
other resource, that is not rude. Some people seem to think it is
inherently rude to do that, but they are mistaken. If someone goes
beyond that, calling people names or cursing or such, that is rude,
and your comments may apply. But such posts are pretty rare here.
As for venting frustrations, there may be a component of that in some
of these responses. But I'd say that most of them have the goal of
keeping this list a worthwhile, on-topic, substantive, informative
place. As such, a little time invested in such posts can be a
worthwhile investment. It'd be a shame to see this list go down the
tubes, as many 'net forums do.
In a way it's weird that all this discussion has come up now, because
recently there's been more participation in this list from people at
Sun, with some responses indicating what is and/or isn't appropriate
on this list, and some periodic posts with guidelines for using and
posting to the list. Prior to that, more self-policing was needed.
But hopefully now that will be less the case.
