This is a good venue for recommending Sun's Forte-for-Java Community Edition
(FREE),
which is quite nice.
For the maximum in vendor independence, install the Xemacs
editor-mail-handler-cum-
kitchen-sink and go for the JDE package. (see www.xemacs.org)
