It is 'almost' a J2EE compliant WebServer + EJB Application Server +
Transaction Manager. I say 'almost' because IBM does not always follow Sun's
J2EE compatibility rules. Also IMHO they are almost always behind in Virtual
Machnie/Java Versions. Most of IBM is at Java1.1.8 level when the rest of the
world is using Java2-STDedition V1.3. Your Servlets and Server Pages with the
latest specs (as defined by Tomcat latest) might not execute/compile on
WebSphere (also depends on which version of WebSphare) Please complain to IBM
when they do not follow J2EE or EJB specs. IBM is a very GOOD but very LARGE
company, who cares about backward compatibility (meaning that they must also
take care of legacy CICS users with Java) much more then with keeping to
'outside' standards. With the help of people like you we might be able to
'prod' them into recognizing that we are in the 3rd millennium.
Regards - George
(I do not work for either IBM or SUN)
p.s There are many good books on J2EE Application Servers. You could use Sun's
J2EE reference implementation as your learning tool.
