At this moment we are evaluating the efficacy and performance of ASP+ and
VB+ (the .NET implementations) by our ASP/VB developers against several web
services (WebSphere, J2EE native, and iPlanet) implemented by moi. I have a
friend outside our company who has been doing prototyping with C# for 6
months and loves it (of course, he's a C++ stress freak). I'll let you guys
know the results of our tests. Meanwhile, the consensus in our shop is that
Microsoft is going to gain big with .NET in NT environments because
application server add-ons like JRun and Tomcat are too risky for
administrators comfortable with Microsoft technology (IIS). We see most of
our clients with Unix/Linux installations as having little reservation about
implementing J2EE technologies on Apache and Netscape.
I might add that conceptually, .NET has the potential to be a better
programming environment than pure Java because your development teams can
use whatever programming language they want, be it Perl, Python, C, C++,
Visual Basic, ASP, Smalltalk, Java, or even COBOL - as long as the
interpreter can compile the chosen language to the .NET bytecode (the
so-called CLR, or Common Language Runtime), it doesn't matter what
programming language is used.
We live in interesting times!
Cheers!
Mark
