Wow, that's a useful response. And not at all egotistical.
It's a shame these list meta-discussions come up, but unfortunately
they do. And there's no place to have them except the list itself.
If the list appears to be heading off-course, I think a little
mid-trip course correction is useful and not unreasonable (ounce of
prevention/pound of cure and all).
Further, the list guidelines/policy are very clear on certain points,
and checking the archives first is one of them. (The policy is not
there to be a burden, but to make the list as worthwhile as possible,
to keep the signal/noise ratio high.) The policy is available as a
link off the list archive page, appended at the bottom of each list
message, repeated here:
http://archives.java.sun.com/archives/servlet-interest.html
Here's a direct link to the policy:
http://www.betaversion.org/~pier/policy.html
If you're not familiar with it, I suggest you check it out.
FWIW, I find checking the archives not just courteous, but practical.
Often I can find the answer to my question right away, without having
to wait for people to respond.

Of course, Christopher is very good about answering questions himself.
And he seems to have more patience than Nic or I :-).
