We call these Janus (after the roman 2 faced god) apps, the have a visually rich
public (inter)face and a quick and simple admin (inter)face.
When we are talking to an oracle database we use some xsl we cooked up which
automatically generates html forms from the table's metadata, the forms contain input
elements of the right size, name, value for all the fields in the table.
We then extend the style sheet to cover special cases such as options where the
possible values are limited. We also write views that hide some of the complexity of
the data structure. Then we link the pages into a workflow.
The great thing about this is that as soon as we have a database, we have a crude
interface to all of the tables.
If we update a table definition, the form reflects it.
