Have you look at the "Singleton" design?? With Singleton, you can have exactly only one instance per JVM (or classloader to be more accurate). You can then use this Singleton object to control any resources (like connection to database). Try J2EEPATTERNS-INTEREST discuss group or do a little search on the web and you should find plenty of information regarding design pattern.
