You might consider asking this on the Tomcat mailing lists -
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat

You'll find quite a few Tomcat users there. It would also be helpful if
you clarify what big/critical means. I know from experience that
medium-sized applications run great using just Tomcat. However, that
tells you nothing about what I consider medium to be :)
